Ram Navami is a great Hindu festival of our country. The birth of Lord Rama, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is observed as Ram Navami. Lord Rama is the son of Dhasaratha, the King of Ayodhya. Ram Navami is popular in the northern states of India and it falls on the 9th day of Hindu month Chaitra (March-April). Devotees chant the name of Lord Rama throughout the day. Many among them fast while others restrict certain food on Ram Navami. Devotees also read the great epic Ramayana on this day. It is a belief that by reciting the name of Lord Rama and dedicating oneself to Lord Rama will help to lead a righteous life.

Ram Navami is a Hindu Traditional festival that falls in the month of Chaitra of Hindu Calendar. The month Chaitra includes days from the months March and April. Ram Navami is observed exactly on the 9t day of bright fortnight of Chaitra.

Ram Navami is the birthday of Lord Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took the human form “Rama” in the great epic Ramayana. Lord Rama is the son of Dhasaratha, King of Ayodhya. Lord Rama took birth to kill the mighty king of Lanka, Ravana. Ravana was an asura, a demon of evil.

Lord Rama is considered a pure, divine and blissful soul who is beautiful and strong. He came down to earth to establish righteousness. One who prays Lord Rama can attain righteousness. To lead a happy and peaceful life through such righteousness, devotees keep chanting the name of Lord Rama the whole day. Devotees fast for nine days of the Navaratri and make offerings to the Lord every day. Temples are decorated very beautifully and chants of Lord Rama can be sensed all around the temples. The great epic Ramayana is narrated in many temples and shrine. At homes, people read Ramayana with great devotion. Ram Navami is a popular festival in the northern states of our country whereas in Southern India it is celebrated in a different way. Southern states celebrate Ram Navami as the wedding of Lord Rama with Sita and call it Sitarama Kalyanam.
