How to use prepositions to tell where or when

Prepositions are words that indicate location, direction, or time. Common prepositions include in, on, at, by, for, from, of, off, over, and under. Prepositions are often used before nouns or pronouns to form phrases. For example:

• The book is on the table.

Prepositions help us understand the relationships between things. For example, in the sentence “The cat slept under the bed,” the word “under” is a preposition. It tells us where the cat slept.

Prepositions are usually short words, and they’re often found before nouns. That’s why they’re sometimes called “Determiners.” But some longer words can be used as prepositions, too. For example:

• I’m worried about you.
• What are you looking forward to?
• We went out despite the weather.
