Intolerance is a threat to peace and democracy. It has been an obstacle to social and economic development of the world. The International Day for Tolerance helps remind people about the worth and dignity of every human being. It encourages members of the society to live together in peace and harmony.

In past years, there have been acts of intolerance such as violence, racism, and terrorism. These social issues have been on the rise, causing mankind to worry of the future generation. Usually, all of these injustice and atrocities are targeted towards the weaker section of the population. The most vulnerable members of our society include ethnic and religious minorities, immigrants, migrant workers, and refugees. These groups of the society are greatly affected by the social discrimination and are pushed to live a miserable life. The International Day for Tolerance was declared by the United Nation, with a view to strengthen the tolerance among people. This measure will foster mutual understanding between different groups of people and their cultures.

Various celebrations are conducted across the world on this day. Among them, one notable festive event is the “Universal Tolerance Cartoon Festival” conducted in Drammen, Norway. This event was organized as an International Cartoon Festival in 2013.

The core of this imperative initiative is handled by the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights organization. The increasing violent extremism and the conflicts among countries and societies have created a fundamental disregard for human life. The International Day for Tolerance is aimed to promote a spirit of non-violence and tolerance towards the world nations.
