What is Summer Solstice?

Last Updated on June 21, 2022

Summer Solstice (2022) is the longest day of the year and occurs when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. This happens because the earth’s tilt is pointing towards the sun. The word ‘solstice’ comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning ‘sun-standing’. After the solstice, the days start getting shorter again until the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year.

In the northern hemisphere, summer solstice falls on June 21st or 22nd (This year 2022 too). This is when the sun is at its northernmost point in the sky and is directly overhead at noon.
