In phonics, a digraph is two letters that represent one sound. For example, the letter pair “sh” makes the “sh” sound as in “ship” or “wish.” Vowel digraphs are especially common in English. In vowel digraphs, the two letters together make a new sound, and that new sound is almost always a long vowel sound. For example, the letter pair “ai” makes the long “a” sound as in “kite.” The most common vowel digraphs are: ai, ee, igh, oa, and oo. There are others, but these five are found in a lot of words.
