Wh-questions Worksheets For Kids

Free printable who, what, when, where and why worksheets, with an answer key for every sheet — ten sheets of six questions each.

Each question gives a sentence with the first word missing and three question words to choose from. The five do different jobs: who asks about a person, what about a thing, when about a time, where about a place and why about a reason. Getting them apart is most of what a young reader needs to start asking questions of their own.

Only one answer fits

This is the part question-word worksheets are usually careless about. Where do you eat breakfast? and When do you eat breakfast? are both perfectly good English, so a sheet offering both has two right answers and no fair way to mark it — the child who picked the other one was not wrong. Every question here was checked against all five words before it went in, and any sentence that took more than one was reworded until it took only one.

What is in the set

The ten sheets are grouped by everyday topics — school, family, food, a normal day, around town, animals, shopping, weather, games and a holiday — so the vocabulary stays familiar and the child can concentrate on the question word rather than on reading. Answers are spread evenly across a, b and c, so guessing one letter all the way down will not get anyone very far.

The answer key repeats every sheet with the correct option circled, so a parent or a classroom helper can mark a page without working through the questions first. Print at 100% on US Letter or A4.

Ways to use them

One sheet is about five minutes, which makes it a good warm-up or a settling task at the start of a lesson. In a group, try covering the three choices and asking the child to supply the missing word themselves — the options are there to make the sheet markable, not because the question needs them. Reading the finished sentence aloud is usually enough for a child to hear whether it works.
