The thirteen Hindi vowels, in order
What the game asks
A short run of vowels appears with one or two letters taken out. Fill the gaps from the tiles below and the game moves on. Ten questions, then a score and a table showing exactly which ones went wrong.
It is really a test of one thing: whether the child knows the order of the स्वर, not just the shapes. Reciting the varnamala from अ every time is slow; recognising that ऊ comes between उ and ऋ is what fluent reading needs.
How to play
- Tap an empty box to choose which gap you are filling, then tap a letter. With two gaps you can answer either one first.
- Tap a filled box to take the letter back out and put it in the pool again.
- Next lights up once every gap is filled. There is no time limit.
- Two of the five tiles are correct when there are two gaps, so the extra tiles are deliberate distractors — guessing does not pay.
The thirteen स्वर
The chart under the game shows all thirteen in order. This is the same list, with a rough English sound and the word each is usually taught with:

The last two, अं and अः, are strictly the anusvara and the visarga rather than vowels in their own right. They are taught at the end of the स्वर list in almost every Hindi primer, so they are included here too.
Before playing, and after
- Read the chart aloud once before the first round. The order is learned by sound long before it is learned by sight.
- Do the wrong ones again. The results table is the point of the game — it tells you which two or three letters are actually shaky, and those are the ones to practise.
- ऋ is where most children stumble, because it has no close English sound and sits in the middle of the list. If it keeps coming up wrong, that is normal.
- Then move on to the व्यंजन. The consonants are a far longer list, and the habit of learning letters in order is what makes it manageable.
