When you need a leave letter

Most schools will not mark an absence as excused unless a parent puts it in writing. A phone call to the office often is not enough — the class teacher needs something they can keep, and in many schools the letter is pasted or written into the school diary so it stays on record. You will usually need one for:

Illness — fever, a cold, a stomach upset, or anything the child cannot sit through a school day with.
A medical appointment — often just a half day, which is why the half-day option is there.
A family function — a wedding, a naming ceremony, a religious event.
Travel — visiting grandparents, a family trip, going to your native place.
A bereavement or family emergency — write it briefly; no school will ask for detail.

Where the letter actually goes

This surprises parents new to the Indian school system, so it is worth being clear:

Short leave — one or two days. Write it in the school diary or almanac and send it with your child. The class teacher signs it. This is the commonest route by far.
Same-day illness. A message on the class WhatsApp group or an email to the class teacher, followed by the written letter in the diary when the child returns.
Three days or more. Many schools want this addressed to the Principal rather than the class teacher, and some ask for it in advance. Check your school's diary — the rule is usually printed in the first few pages.
Medical leave beyond two or three days. Attach a doctor's certificate. Some schools require it, and it saves a second conversation.

What a good leave letter contains

The letter this tool writes includes all of these, in the order Indian schools expect:

Who it is to — the class teacher, and the school name if you have added it.
The date you are writing.
A subject line — one line saying what the letter is for. Teachers read dozens of these; the subject line is what lets them file it in two seconds.
Who you are and who your child is, with the class and section. A teacher may take four sections; "Rohan" alone is not enough.
The exact dates, written out in full so there is no confusion between 09/10 and 10/09.
The reason, in one short phrase. You do not owe the school a detailed account.
An assurance that your child will catch up on the missed work. Small, but teachers notice it.
Your name and your relationship to the child.

Keep it short

A class teacher may read twenty of these in a week. The most useful letter is the one that answers who, when and why in a few lines and stops. Two things to avoid: apologising at length, and explaining more than you need to. "Due to a family function" is a complete reason. So is "due to fever".

After you generate the letter

Copy puts the whole letter on your clipboard — paste it into WhatsApp, an email, or a notes app.
Print gives you just the letter on a clean page, without the form, if your school wants a printed copy.
Copying it into the diary by hand? Read it off the screen. Many schools prefer a handwritten letter in the child's own diary.
Sign it. Whichever way you send it, a leave letter needs a parent's signature to count. A typed name is not a signature.

A worked example

Suppose Anita Sharma's son Rohan, in Class 5 - B, has a fever and will miss school from Thursday to Saturday. She enters her name, his name, the class, chooses More than one day, picks the two dates, and taps the fever chip. The letter comes out addressed to the class teacher, with a subject line reading Leave for 3 days for Rohan Sharma, the dates written in full, and a closing line promising he will catch up on the work. She taps Copy and pastes it into the class WhatsApp group before school starts, then writes the same letter into his diary when he goes back.

Writing it yourself instead

If you would rather write your own, the shortest workable version is four lines:

Respected Sir/Madam, my son Rohan Sharma of Class 5 - B will not be able to attend school from 10 September to 12 September due to fever. Kindly grant him leave for these three days. He will complete the work he misses. Thanking you, Anita Sharma.

That is enough. Everything the generator adds — the subject line, the date, the formal closing — makes it tidier and easier for the teacher to file, but the four lines above will not be refused by any school.
